FESTIVAL DATES AND LOCATION
28 August 1 September, 2022
Ōtautahi Christchurch
Asian Composers League Festival & General Assembly
Asian Composers League (ACL) Festivals occur every 1-2 years, and to date Aotearoa New Zealand has hosted three, always in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, most recently in 2007. The ACL is extremely active in the Asia-Pacific region, involving new music networks in Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkey.
At ACL 2022 in Ōtautahi Christchurch, performances of innovative Asia-Pacific music written mostly in the last decade will receive excellent performances by NZ’s top new-music performers alongside two visiting ensembles from the Pacific region – ELISION (Aus) and the Formalist Quartet (US). New Zealand ensembles will include the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Benjamin Northey), Christchurch Youth Orchestra, the NZ Trio, and soloists such as Mark Menzies and Justin DeHart.
It is 15 years since the ACL and ISCM festivals were last brought together (December 2007 in Hong Kong), and it will be a first for Aotearoa New Zealand to host this summit of new music activity. Four ACL morning sessions and discussions will occur in Ōtautahi Christchurch, and the remainder of each day will be filled with festival events for participants and audience to meet and enjoy strongly positive cultural exchange through living and breathing new music created by many composers from across the region, including young composers.
